Augmentin Syrup contains two generic active ingredients.One of these is penicillin called amoxycillin, and the other is clavulanate. It be part of the penicillin group of antibiotics.

Augmentin Syrup is prescribed to treat a wide range of infections caused by bacteria.These infections may influence the chest (e.g., bronchitis or pneumonia), bladder (e.g., cystitis), sinuses (e.g., sinusitis), the ears (e.g., otitis media) or the skin.

It should be taken immediately before or with the first mouthful of food. This syrup works best when taken this way. It may also help to stop stomach upsets. However, this syrup will still work if taken without food.

Space the doses as evenly as possible during the day. If your child is taking it three times a day, give a dose about every eight hours.

Missed Dose

Give the missed dose as soon as you recall. Then give the next dose at a time it usually is due. Do not give two doses within four hours of each other.

Do not try to make up for missed doses by giving more than one dose at a time. Giving greater than the prescribed dose can increase the chance of unwanted side-effects.


Immediately consult the doctor for advice if you think your child or anyone else may have taken too much this syrup, even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning.

General Instructions

Before your child starts taking this syrup to tell the doctor if

General warnings

It can cause a severe form of diarrhea also known as Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). It's marked by loose, watery stool with an abnormal foul smell.

If not treated promptly, CDAD causes dehydration and can cause sepsis in severe cases.

Since dehydration can disrupt your levels of sodium and potassium, you may have tremors, feel weak, have an irregular heartbeat, or all three.

Augmentin, like other penicillin antibiotics, can cause a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.
