Ivercor 12mg Tablet (Ivermectin)

Approved uses of oral ivermectin:

• Strongyloidiasis: an intestinal infection caused by the threadworm Strongyloides stercoralis.
• Onchocerciasis (river blindness): an infection caused by the worm Onchocerca volvulus. Ivermectin kills the immature worms (microfilariae), not the adult worms, so repeat treatment is often needed.

Commonly prescribed by doctors (off-label):

• Scabies: the US CDC lists oral ivermectin as a treatment option for classic and crusted scabies, especially when creams are not practical.
• Head lice: doctors sometimes use oral ivermectin when lotions have not worked.

Ivermectin works only against parasites. It does not treat bacterial or viral infections and is not approved for COVID-19 or cancer.

Ivermectin binds to special chloride channels in the nerve and muscle cells of worms and mites. This paralyses and kills the parasite. Humans do not have these particular channels, and at normal doses ivermectin does not easily reach the brain, which is why it can be used as a medicine when taken correctly.

Because it acts on parasites rather than relieving symptoms directly, it may take days to weeks for symptoms such as itching to settle.

The dose of ivermectin is based on body weight, not a fixed number of tablets. Your doctor will work out the right dose for you.

Example: at 200 mcg per kg, a person weighing 60 kg (132 lb) needs about 12 mg, which is one Ivercor 12mg tablet. Heavier or lighter patients need a different amount.

Missed second dose: if you are on a two-dose course and miss the second dose, take it as soon as you remember and tell your doctor. Never take extra tablets to make up for it.

• Take it exactly as your doctor prescribes.
• Swallow the tablet with a glass of water.
• The official product label says to take ivermectin on an empty stomach. For scabies, the CDC notes that experts recommend taking it with food, because food increases absorption. Follow your doctor's advice for your condition.
• For scabies, close contacts and family members are usually treated at the same time, and clothes, towels and bedding are washed in hot water.
• Do not take more than prescribed. A higher dose does not work faster and increases the risk of side effects.

Common side effects (reported in about 2 to 3 out of 100 people treated for strongyloidiasis):

• Dizziness
• Itching
• Nausea
• Diarrhoea

In river blindness treatment, the dying microfilariae can cause a reaction (called a Mazzotti reaction) in the first few days: itching, rash, fever, joint pain and, less often, fast heartbeat or swelling of the feet.

Rare but serious: confusion, drowsiness, unsteadiness or reduced consciousness (nervous system effects), and allergic reactions such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing. Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if any of these happen.

• Allergy: do not take ivermectin if you are allergic to it or any ingredient in the tablet.
• Children under 15 kg: safety has not been established.
• Pregnancy: the label advises against use in pregnancy, because safety has not been established.
• Breastfeeding: ivermectin passes into breast milk in small amounts. Use only if your doctor decides the benefit outweighs the risk.
• Loa loa infection: people who have lived in or travelled to parts of Central and West Africa where the Loa loa eye worm is common should be checked first. Heavy Loa loa infection can lead to a rare but serious brain reaction.
• Weak immune system (including HIV): strongyloidiasis may need repeated courses and closer follow-up.
• Blood thinners: rare cases of raised INR have been reported with warfarin. Tell your doctor if you take warfarin.
• Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, and about any liver disease.

Storage: store below 30°C (86°F), away from moisture, and out of reach of children.

Overdose: too much ivermectin can cause confusion, disorientation and reduced consciousness, as well as rash, swelling, headache, dizziness, nausea or vomiting. Get emergency medical help.

How quickly does Ivercor 12mg work?
Ivermectin starts acting on parasites within hours, but symptoms take longer to clear. With scabies, itching can continue for a few weeks after the mites are killed. This does not always mean treatment has failed. See a doctor if symptoms continue.

Should I take ivermectin with food or on an empty stomach?
The product label says empty stomach with water. For scabies, the CDC notes experts recommend taking it with a meal to improve absorption. Follow your doctor's instructions.

How many Ivercor 12mg tablets should I take?
It depends on your body weight and the infection. At the usual 200 mcg per kg, a 60 kg adult needs about one 12 mg tablet. Your doctor will confirm the right dose.

Can children take Ivercor 12mg?
It is not recommended for children who weigh less than 15 kg. For heavier children, a doctor must calculate the dose by weight.

Is ivermectin approved for COVID-19 or cancer?
No. Ivermectin is approved for certain parasitic infections only. It is not approved for viral infections such as COVID-19, or for cancer.

Do I need a prescription?
Ivermectin is a prescription medicine. Use it only under the guidance of a doctor who knows your medical history.
