Dangerous 'viagra' pills on sale at sex shop, court told

Brian O'Byrne, of Capel Street in Dublin, and his former partner, Jacqueline Byrne, of Elmcastle Drive, Kilnamanagh, Tallaght, have been accused of breaking medicinal products regulations.

The case has been brought by the Irish Medicines Board (IMB) in connection with products on sale at an adult shop called Shauna's, which the defendants allegedly operated, on Dublin's Capel Street, in 2010.

Two officers from the IMB carried out inspections at the sex shop where videos, magazines and toys were stocked, Dublin District Court heard.

The IMB inspectors seized several samples of three products which were imported from the UK: Kamagra tablets, an unregistered Viagra-like drug; coconut, peach and passion fruit flavoured Kamagra oral jelly; as well as tubes of Retardin.

Tests showed that they contained active ingredients that should only be sold by a registered pharmacist and under the direction of a doctor.

It is alleged that from March 23 to December 8, 2010, O'Byrne and Byrne kept and helped sell these products.

O'Byrne and Byrne have pleaded not guilty; combined, they face 25 charges under the medicinal products regulations.

John Lynch, the IMB's director of compliance, told Judge John O'Neill that the Retardin cream contained the anaesthetic lidocaine, which is often used in injections by dentists.

He said the IMB database showed that authority had not been given for Retardin to be legally placed on the market in Ireland.

The court heard the tubes of Retardin carried a legend saying "to be applied in advance of love play and intercourse".

Mr Lynch said Kamagra tablets, which are restricted in Ireland, contained the active ingredient sildenafil, used to treat erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil is confined to prescription control and requires advice of a medical practitioner, he said.

It can cause serious side-effects for people suffering from heart problems. It can also result in headaches, stomach aches and visual problems.

The Kamagra jelly product also contained the same active ingredient and carries the same health risks.
